The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies program (BIS) is an opportunity in
which I was given the liberty to choose two emphasis areas of study to essentially create one degree that works for me. I chose to study the BIS degree because it has enabled me combine disciplines so that
I am able to explore careers that involve communications theories and mass communications topics.
As far as Communications courses I studied; Introduction to Human Communication,
Public Speaking, Oral Interpretation, Intercultural Communication, Small Group Communication, Performance, Organizational
Communication, and Communication in Popular Culture.
To the extent that I studied Mass Communication I studied; Media and Society,
Public Relations, Emerging Media, Visual Communication, History of Mass Communication and Media and Politics.
In the four core BIS classes I was able to learn how the concepts from each
mass communication course and communication course came together to provide me with one overall concept. The History of Mass Communication provided awareness when I see how photography and radio have been vastly
effective by the evolution of technology. At this juncture I’m still learning
how the history of mass communication directly affects new technology. The four
core BIS Classes enabled me to provide future employers with an effective image of who I am and what goals I’m working
towards. The portfolios and resumes are the beginning steps to getting out into
the real world and working towards a goal. BIS core classes also provided the
practice and confidence to speak publicly and intelligently about our career interests.
